Senior 5 A Side Competition 2006
January is always much anticipated by all the companies in East Antrim Battalion as it offers the opportunity to enter a competition - for some the only one they enter all year.
Entries were disappointing this year for the Senior 5 A Sides. Seven companies did enter and the competition on the day was excellent as all the games were competitive - there were no whipping boys!
The seven teams were split into two groups, with 1st Ballyclare winning group 1 followed by 1st Whitehead in second place.
Group 2 had only 3 teams, each played each other twice, and was a very competitive group. 4th Carrick came out as group winners, with 2/3 Larne in second place. 1st Larne, 3rd Ballyclare and 2nd Carrick all failed to make it through the group stage.
The semi finals were all great games and the standard of football was very high. Semi 1 saw 1st Ballyclare demolish 2/3 Larne 4-0. Some of the football played by 1st Ballyclare was simply breathtaking and they thoroughly deserved their victory.
Semi final 2 saw Whitehead face 4th Carrick. This was another great game and could easily have gone either way as both teams held the lead at some stage. At 2-2 with seconds to go, Whitehead hammered one into the net to seal a 3-2 victory.
This set up a mouth watering re-match between 1st Ballyclare and 1st Whitehead. The group match between these two rivals boiled over at times and took a firm hand from referee Donald Blair. Fortunately, the final was much more controlled and was a great advert for BB football. Both sides tried, and succeeded, to play good football. It took a real moment of inspiration from Ballyclare captain David Thompson to seal a 1-0 victory for his side.
Many thanks to Donald Blair for officiating all the games and to Hilary Montgomery for acting as time keeper.
Winners - 1st Ballyclare
